Our Occupational Workshop: Creating with Purpose

Discover how our occupational workshop transforms lives through creative and productive activities that enhance each person's abilities.

El Arca Honduras' Occupational Workshop is much more than a workspace: it is a place where each person discovers their potential and finds a sense of purpose. Since we opened our doors in 1977, we have firmly believed that all people, regardless of their abilities, have unique talents to offer the world.

In our workshop, participants engage in a variety of activities ranging from crafts and art to productive tasks that contribute to the community's functioning. Each activity is carefully adapted to respect the pace and abilities of each individual.

Creativity as a development tool

What makes our workshop special is the atmosphere of respect and warmth experienced every day. There are no labels here: just people sharing, learning, and growing together.

One of the most enriching aspects is seeing how people who arrive for the first time, often shy or insecure, gradually gain confidence and show their true personality. The workshop becomes their second home.

We invite the entire Honduran community to learn firsthand about the work we do. Every visit, every gesture of support, strengthens our mission.

Community impact

The workshop operates Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in both communities. In Choluteca, the Taller Arca Emmanuel houses four workstations: pinata-making, loom weaving, sublimation, and decorative painting. In Tegucigalpa, the workshop specializes in recycled material crafts and artisanal card-making. Currently 22 members participate across both communities.

"Before, I did nothing at home, just sat watching TV. Here I learned to make pinatas and now neighbors order them for children's parties. I feel useful for the first time in my life," says Dona Rosa Amelia Pineda, 48, who joined the workshop in 2020.

El Arca's pinatas have become a signature product. Each pinata requires three to five days of work. The most popular designs include children's characters, stars, and the traditional seven-pointed pinatas. During Christmas season, the workshop produces up to 60 pinatas monthly.

Loom weaving is another workshop specialty. Using hand-dyed cotton threads in vibrant colors, our members create hammocks, bags, placemats, and rugs. Don Jose David Hernandez, who has been weaving for 15 years, can complete a hammock in two and a half weeks.

The workshop is grounded in L'Arche's philosophy that work is not just productivity but encounter. Unlike a conventional sheltered workshop, here a person's value is not measured by output, but by the joy of participation and the relationships built while working.

In 2025, workshop products generated revenue covering 35 percent of the Choluteca community's operating expenses. Evaluations show that 90 percent of participants improve their fine motor skills and 78 percent report higher self-esteem after six months of continuous participation.

To support the workshop, you can buy our products at craft fairs, place special orders for pinatas or weavings, or donate materials like tissue paper, glue, cotton thread, and acrylic paints. Contact us at info@elarcadehonduras.org.
