Volunteering at El Arca: Stories that Transform
Every volunteer who comes to El Arca takes away much more than they give. Meet the stories of those who have found in our community a place that changes perspectives.
Volunteering at El Arca Honduras is an experience that transforms both those who receive and those who give. Since our beginnings, we have welcomed hundreds of volunteers from Honduras and around the world.
What many volunteers discover is that people with intellectual disabilities have an extraordinary capacity to teach what truly matters: authenticity, genuine joy, and the value of human relationships. At El Arca, vulnerability is not a weakness, but a doorway to deeper connections.
Life-changing experiences
Volunteers participate in various activities: they support the occupational workshop, accompany physiotherapy sessions, share meals and celebrations, and above all, build meaningful relationships with community members. It's not about doing for others, but doing together.
We welcome volunteers of all ages and professional backgrounds. University groups completing social service, professionals seeking meaningful experience, and people from other countries wanting to know Honduras from a different perspective.
If you feel the call to be part of something bigger than yourself, we invite you to visit. You don't need prior experience: just an open heart and willingness to walk together.
How to join us
Since 2010, over 250 volunteers from 14 countries have passed through our communities. France, Canada, Spain, the United States, Germany, Belgium, Mexico, Colombia, and other L'Arche network countries have sent volunteers who stay between three months and a full year. Nationally, we collaborate with universities like UNAH, UPNFM, and Universidad Catolica de Honduras.
"I came to El Arca thinking I was coming to help, and I left knowing I was the one who received the most. Luis Manuel, a member with Down syndrome, taught me to dance punta in the kitchen while we washed dishes. In that moment I understood that inclusion is not a concept: it's a song you dance together," wrote Camille Dubois, a French volunteer who spent nine months in Choluteca in 2023.
The volunteer program operates in three modalities: long-term stays (3-12 months) living in community; university social service (200-800 hours) for students of psychology, social work, special education, and physiotherapy; and group visits where companies, churches, or institutions spend a day or week learning alongside our members.
L'Arche's volunteering philosophy is distinctive. We don't seek volunteers who come to do things for our members, but people willing to do things with them. The assistant who arrives is not a professional providing a service, but a life companion who learns as much as they teach. This mutuality is what Jean Vanier called reciprocal transformation.
A survey of 85 former volunteers from 2018 to 2025 revealed that 92 percent considered the experience one of the most significant in their lives. Sixty-eight percent permanently changed their perception of intellectual disability, and 34 percent chose to professionally dedicate themselves to inclusion or social services as a direct result of their time at El Arca.
To volunteer at El Arca Honduras, write to us at info@elarcadehonduras.org telling us who you are, what motivates you, and how much time you'd like to dedicate. If you're from another country, we help with invitation letters for your visa. The only thing we ask is a genuine commitment to share life with us, with humility and eagerness to learn.
